Rehabilitation of the “Nieuwe Haven” Terminal Paramaribo, Suriname

Originally the New Port of Paramaribo was built in the sixties as a bulk port. But through the years the shipping sector in Suriname evolved towards container transport. The docks and the hinterland were not adequately equipped for the expedition of containerships entering Suriname. At the same time, the freight handling at the Port of Paramaribo grew enormously because of the expanding economy. These circumstances made it necessary to adapt the port to the growing volume of freight handling and to the handling of containers.

Commissioned by NV Havenbeheer Suriname, financed by the European Union and in collaboration with Ballast Nedam, PMC, ACE Consultancy and the Ministry of Planning and Development Aid, AMB has executed the following constructions:

  • New sewage system of approximately 15000 meters round concrete pipes
  • New concrete docks of 500 meters (length) and 50 meters (width)
  • Heavy load container stacking area of 50.000 m2
  • New anchor (moor) constructions
  • New lighting

This project facilitated the economic growth with a port / a place for transshipment of containers that complies with modern day requirements. It has increased the revenue of NV Havenbeheer Suriname and enabled them to invest in the further development of the port.
