Closure of the Dry Residue Disposal Area (DRDA) 1

On August 14th, 2017 Aannemingsmaatschappij Baitali N.V. in collaboration with Haukes started working on the DRDA1 project for Suralco. The goal of this project is to rehabilitate Alcoa (Paranam) and remove all rest materials from the exploitation process of alum earth. The rehabilitation of the location should result in the new growth of vegetation. The DRDA1 project has been named after its location, the so-called dry stack residue area 1, with a total surface of 225 ha.

This project contains the instalment of an underground dewatering system that will lead the contaminated underground water to a basin for purification. We will also cover the whole area with a geomembrane and a layer clay (45cm). This will prevent infiltration of (rain)water and thus will minimalize contamination. After purification, the clean water will be transported above ground to the ring canal. Via the ring canal the clean water will flow to other nearby waters. During the tender of this project Haukes and AMB approached each other to work together on this project because it can be divided into two main disciplines that are the core activity of both parties. For Haukes the core activity is hauling of material and for AMB the core activity is construction of the dewatering system. AMB installs an underground drain pipe system of approximately 40 km with submersible pumps.

For the execution of this project AMB will be using a trench box to enable the placement of the pipes. FYI:
